Clear skies greeted the 161 teams this year at the 12th Annual
Ainad Shriners Benefit tournament.
This has been a very popular tournament on
Rend
Lake
throughout the years and for good reason.
The Ainad Shriners run one the best tournaments around and
really know how to take care of the fisherman and families.
It all starts with an orderly arrival and launch
accompanied by coffee and donuts.
After the day's fishing, the anglers are provided
hamburgers, hot dogs, and various other treats along with beer and
soda. There are
countless attendance prizes as well for the fishermen and
families. You can't
help but be impressed with this tournament and it is for a great
cause. The Ainad
Shriners help crippled and burned children.
If you are looking for a tournament to put on next year's
schedule, this is the one. It
is a great time for all even if you don't catch fish.
This year's teams had to deal with a tough day on
Rend
Lake
. The weather started
clear and sunny but eventually turned to clouds and rain.
The wind shifted from out of the west to northwest
throughout the day and was around 10 to 20 mph all day.
Rend
Lake
was stingy but good number of fish were weighed in and it was a
real tight leaderboard. Less
than 2 ½ pounds separated the winners from the last paying
position of 15th place.
This
year's winners were Kebin Young and Dare Lindel from Valier.
They brought in 4 fish for a total weight of 11.80 pounds
and took home the first place prize of $3950.00.
They caught there fish on a mixture of baits.
Kebin and Dare focused on shallow water cover to catch
their fish on both wood and rocks and covered several areas on the
lake.
In
2nd place was Scott Shaw of
Mt.
Vernon
and Brad Peterson of Waltonville.
They also brought in 4 fish for their weight of 11.05
pounds. For their
efforts, they were awarded $1580.00.
They caught 3 keepers early and the 4th one right before
the weigh in. Scott
and Brad caught their fish on green pumpkin worms and spinnerbaits.
The north end of
Rend
Lake
was the area of choice for the team and they fished shallow bushes
and laydowns to catch their fish.
Finishing
in 3rd place was Robert Hawkins of
Mt.
Vernon
and Travis Graham of Bonnie. They
took home $1185.00 for bringing in a 5 fish limit weighing 10.70
pounds. They were able
to cull through 7 keepers to come up with their limit.
Shallow water and wood cover on the north end of the lake
was also the key pattern for them.
They used brush hogs and spinnerbaits to catch their limit.
Taking
home Big Bass honors and the nice check for $1600.00 was the
husband and wife team of Carl and Brenda Benson of
Granite City
,
IL
. They had a nice
stringer of 8.95 pounds that narrowly missed finishing in the
money. Fortunately for
them their stringer included a 5.00 lb bass.
Carl caught the bass around 11 in the morning off the
highway 154 rocks. He
caught the fish on a Spot Remover jighead with a 6 inch green
pumpkin worm.
