The first annual Chad Morgenthaler Special Olympics Benefit Tournament was held on Rend Lake September 30th and October 1st.  The tournament kicked off with a banquet held on Friday evening at the Rend Lake Resort, anglers and guests were greeted with many participation prizes as well as multiple opportunities for additional merchandise through raffles and silent auctions.  It was obvious to see that the individuals involved in this tournament had put forth a tremendous effort to make this a success.  Special thanks are deserved for all of the participating sponsors for their involvement.

Anglers were greeted the first morning with cloudy skies, wind and intermittent rain.  These weather conditions led to an excellent early bite as many anglers brought five fish limits to the scales.  Leading with 15 pounds 15 ounces after day one was the team of Danny Borcheding and Bud Harris.

Sunshine and light winds met the anglers on day two, which brought a level of uncertainty to most anglers in the field.  When the weigh was over it was obvious that the bite had gotten a lot tougher as several teams in the top 5 had fallen, with only 4 teams managing to bring a limit to the scales both days.  All in all an excellent tournament was had by all.  The final standings are as follows:

1st Place Danny Borcheding and Bud Harris  26lbs 8oz

Danny and Bud caught their fish in the mid-lake region fishing rock and mud banks in 1-5 feet of water with Bagley’s and Bandit crank baits.  Both members of the team mentioned that finding water that wasn’t too clear or too muddy made the difference in their bite.

2nd
place:  Jerry Walker and Bobby Atchison  22lbs 12oz

Jerry and Bobby caught their fish in the mid-lake region throwing spinner baits and jigs on any available wood cover.  1-3 feet of water seemed to be the best depth for this pair of anglers.  They too mentioned the “right” water clarity as a factor in their success.

3rd place:  Mike Goesman and Mike Anderson  20lbs 11oz

Mike and Mike caught their fish flipping soft plastic baits (tubes and sweet beavers) to wood cover.  All of their fish came from the mid lake area in 1-3 feet of water.

4th Place :  Scott Shaw & Brad Peterson           20lbs 5oz
5th Place :  Neal McCord & Stephen Sizemore   19lbs 9oz
6th Place :  Jeff Atchison & Duke Jenkel            19lbs 2oz
7th Place :  Allen Willford & Scott Willford         18lbs 13oz
