ILLINOIS BASS FEDERATION OPEN TRAIL

MIKE BARNES WINS A TOUGH ONE!

Rend Lake, April 1, 2006, by Duke Jenkel

Air Temp: 75 Degrees
Winds: SSW 10-30 MPH
Water Temp: 62-70 Degrees

Anglers were greeted by air temps in the upper fifties as the inaugural tournament of the 2007 Illinois Bass Federation Open Trail kicked off with 59 pros and 39 co-anglers taking the water.  The pre-tournament meeting was held at Rend Lake Marina , and big thanks goes out to Steve Vercillino, owner of Rend Lake Marina for supplying pizza, soda and a meeting place.  Conversations at the meeting were indicating a very stingy bite on Rend, despite water temps ranging from 62 on the lower lake to 70 in the upper-end of the lake.

When the dust settled Mike Barnes from Mackinaw, Illinois led the way with four bass weighing ten pounds and change.  Mike reported catching his fish in the mid-lake region flipping bushes a black and blue jig.  He reported getting bites all day long, he had two good bites early, and the remainder came throughout the day.  His sponsors are Ranger Boats and Mercury motors   Mike also was the ranger cup winner.

George Speed jr, from Litchfield , IL finished second with four fish weighing 9.19 lbs he caught his bass throwing a chartreuse and white spinner bait on wood.  George also had the big bass of the tournament, a 5.37lb beauty. He would like to thank his sponsors, Slim and Spuds Archery, and his wife for their support.

Tim Durdle of Metamora , IL flipped bushes with a tube to finish in third place.  He had four bass weighing a little over eight pounds for the day.
