Anglers
preparing for the 2006 Bass World Classic had great weather to deal with
on Kentucky
Lake. All week the weather was sunny and the temperature was in the
80’s with minimal wind. A cold front passed through the day before
the tournament and cooled things off a bit with morning temps in the low
40’s the days of the tournament. The wind also took a turn for the
worse with north winds blowing in excess 15 to 20 mph each day. The
conditions didn’t seem to have too much effect on the fishing because
the results were good with a lot of fish being weighed.
Taking
home first place this year was the team of Van and Ronnie Siress of
Benton,
KY.
The well known team weighed in 3 fish for 8.93lbs the first day to
put them in 20th place. They turned it up on the second
day with another 3 fish for a remarkable 16.18lbs which included the both
of the day’s two biggest bass of 6.33 and 5.92. The total weight
of 25.11lbs won the duo the first place prize of a fully rigged 519VS
Ranger boat and 225 Mercury Optimax motor valued at $38,000. They
also took home an additional $2,750 cash for 1st place, $3,750
cash for 1st and 2nd place big bass, and $1,500 cash
for 1st place in Ranger Cup bonus money. The team caught
their fish on main lake ledges in the mid lake area using
Stanley
spinnerbaits. The two were definitely on a big fish pattern. One of
the winning team members remarked on stage that they took their wife with
them while practicing for the tournament one day. He caught a 7lb
smallmouth only to be topped by another smallmouth over 7lbs caught by his
wife. What a week for the team from
Benton
,
KY
!
In 2nd
place was Vernon Williams of Pittsburg, IL and George Panick of
Marion,
IL. They weighed 5 fish the 1st day for 11.69lbs to have
them sitting in 6th place. On the second day they weighed
4 fish for 12.80lbs for a total of 24.49lbs. They take home a fully
rigged 188VS Ranger boat with a 150 Mecury valued at $28,000 motor plus an
additional $1,375 in cash. The team caught their fish in shallow
pockets off the main lake. Wind and shad were the keys to making
this pattern effective. They caught their fish on bluegill colored
chatter jigs with a shad trailer.
Finishing
in 3rd place was team of Neil McCord of
West Frankfort,
IL
and Steve Sizemore of Carbondale,
IL. An 11.54lbs limit the 1st day put them in 8th
place. After another limit for 10.09lbs the second day, the 21.63lbs
total earned them a check for $6,250. They also took home an
additional $1,000 cash in Ranger Cup bonus money. They caught their
fish on main lake flats with crankbaits and rat-l-traps. They were
making very long casts to catch their fish in 2 feet or less of water.
This caps off a great year for the team. They started the year off
with a win and finished the year 2nd place in the point
standings in the
Rend
Lake
division. Neil also took home the points title in the BASS Weekend
Series Prairie Division with a win and a couple of top 5 finishes.
