. Stumps
and lay-downs are unique structures found in both shallow and deep
water. Fish are drawn to structure like a magnet, so whether anglers
target stumps or lay-downs, in shallow or deep water, the fish will
usually be there. When
approaching areas with stumps or lay-downs remember throughout the day
fish will relate to structure in several different ways. For example,
the bite may change with the position of the sun, presence of bait
fish, or current. Therefore,
it is very important to fish all angles of the structure and get a
good feeling for what each piece of structure has to offer. I
like to target the stumps and lay-downs from several different angles
using different baits. First
I’ll use a fast bait such as a Reaction Innovations Method crank
glancing it off the structure with a variety of retrieves.
Later in the day I’ll use a slower presentation with a jig or
a Texas-rigged Sweet Beaver soft plastic.
These baits allow anglers to understand what the structure
looks like underwater, and at the same time offer a different
presentation to the fish.
