"Drop Shotting"

Much like the Carolina rig, a drop shot rig is a finesse fishing technique. The main advantage of using a drop shot rig is the versatility. A drop shot can be used in shallow water, mid-range water, or deep water.  The best part, it can be used anytime of the year. It’s also a great way to catch cold-water fish, as well as suspended, or deep fish during the hot summer months.

To fish a drop shot try to use lighter tackle such as a spinning reel with 6–8lb. Maxima Fluorocarbon line, or light monofilament line. To rig the drop shot first tie on a #1 or #2 Diacchi drop shot, or standout hook with a Palomar knot about 18” from the bottom of the line. Next, moving down from the hook toward the end of the line about 10–12”, tie on a small weight. Cut off the excess line and the hook is ready for the bait. For this try a small finesse worm such as a Reaction Innovations Flirt in a natural color, or a 4.95 Flirt rigged wacky style.

After casting let the bait sink, then slightly shake the bait to give it a little bit of action. Be careful not to pull the bait across the bottom (when using this finesse technique, very little shaking action is required to receive big movements). Slowly retrieve the bait a few feet, and then slightly shake again.
