TBF: 2008 Wisconsin State Team Decided
Winnebago System, August 20, 2007, by Danny Mancini

On the wet, windy Winnebago system

High winds and heavy rains, preceded by a cold front made for challenging competition on the Winnebago system this past weekend as 107 anglers battled the adverse weather conditions, in hopes of earning one of only twelve spots on the 2008 Wisconsin State team.

The State tournament was held out of Rainbow Park in Oshkosh Wisconsin , August 17-19 2007. Anglers competing in the tournament had qualified through corresponding zone tournaments held at various times earlier in the year. Anglers were allowed to fish anywhere on the Winnebago system navigable by boat.

As the S/SE winds grew increasingly stronger throughout day one competition on Saturday, anglers who were able to get to their fishing locations faced dangerous swells and waves on the way back to the weigh in. The competitors, who chose to venture out on to Lake Winnebago to find their fish, were especially affected by the high winds and surf. At least five tournament boats were damaged and unable to continue after Saturday’s competition as a direct result of the treacherous conditions. Sunday proved to be no different in regards to the strong winds. The rain was relentless as well, continuing throughout the day with varying intensity.

After the competition had concluded, it was evident that many anglers were able to find and catch fish despite the unfavorable weather conditions. Successful competitors utilized a wide variety of techniques and presentations to catch fish, ranging from shallow water flipping to deep water crank bait and Carolina rig fishing.

The top 12 anglers along with 2 alternates will advance to the Northern Divisional Tournament in 2008 on Lake St. Clair
