MIKE MULLER AND AL GRAY WIN OPENER!
Mississippi River Pool 8, May 13, 2006, by Brian Christianson

It was a tough day for most anglers in more than one way. Out of 44 boats, only 17 limits brought to the scales. Most of the top bags being smallmouth, but a lot of teams seemed to have found both to fill their bags. The temperature just peaked 40 degrees at takeoff and reached no more than 50 degrees throughout the day. Boats flew by us all day as it was easy to see that people were struggling to fill their limits, scrambling around from place to place, just pleading for another fish for the live well.

Despite the weather, not all teams had a hard time finding fish. Coming off a win in the Team Supreme Super North division last week in La Crosse, Mike Muller and Al Gray continued their hot streak by pulling out over 28lbs (4lbs more than 2nd place) of smallmouth to win the first MSBC tournament of the year. I did manage to have a brief discussion with these two gentlemen after the weigh-in and asked them to share a little bit about their day.

“We caught our fish on a point with our boat in 12ft of water throwing a 3/8oz. Team Supreme swim jig. We have some pretty nice fish going on pool 9 right now” Mike said with a big grin on his face. Mike and Al have every right to be smiling, winning two tournaments in two weeks.

Randy Eddy, director of MSBC tournament trail, said that he was happy with the turnout we had this weekend, especially considering the weather conditions.

“The Multiple Sclerosis Bass Circuit brings in many great local anglers, along with a few guys from out of state. I like that there are some people that are willing to make the drive and fish the circuit. It’s also great to see so many people here to help out a good cause and just enjoy the camaraderie. I really look forward to the rest of the season.”
