Multiple Sclerosis Bass Circuit

Demorest and Zabel "Crank" up the Scales!
Mississippi River Pool 8, Oct. 15, 2007, by Cade Laufenberg

The two weeks in the greater La Crosse , Wisconsin area have brought gloomy skies, and as a result, high and cloudy waters. The Mississippi River was high and muddy for this weekends MSBC Fall Classic two day tournament held on pools 7,8, and 9. Many anglers have been reporting tough conditions, but there are still fish to be found, and nice ones too. With day one temperatures into the 60’s with light winds, it was a slugfest for some of the anglers. However, day two brought rains yet again and temperatures in the low 50’s at best.

Only a select few anglers overcame adversity and brought in a good weight on this day. The weights were significantly smaller than day one after this system.

First place team Lloyd Demorest of La Crescent, MN and partner Butch Zabel brought in a heavy 27 lbs on day one to take the lead. With the weights the way they were on day two, and the fish that Lloyd and Butch were on, it seemed as if all they needed to do was catch their limit. They did just that, and yet again brought in an impressive weight. Their day two catch of 8 smallmouth weighed just over 20 lbs and propelled them to the win with 47.58 lbs of smallmouth.

They caught their fish on spooks and crankbaits over shallow wingdams in the 4 foot range. Their catch earned them $2,872, and the team is sponsored by Bob’s Bait and Tackle.

In second with 45.36 lbs of smallmouth was Chet Hawkins and Scott Gartner of La Crosse , Wisconsin . They used lethal weapon swim jigs, rat-l-traps, and Carolina rigs to catch their fish out of three feet of water on sand. Their catch was good enough for $1,890. Country Kitchen, Carpet one, Custom Lures, Red Truck Financial, and Breadoux Pizza are their sponsors.

The third place prize of $1,134 went to Scott Alo of Onalaska , Wisconsin , and Jesse Kasseres of Sparta , Wisconsin . They utilized Carolina rigged plastics, as did many other anglers, catching their fish out of deep wood in the 12 to 14 foot range. Their two day catch of largemouth totaled 44.18 lbs. Their sponsors are cc106.3 radio, Skipperliner, Schmitz Services, Lloyd’s Speedstop, GR graphics, Beautanica, Bangor Lanes, and C&C Catering.

The Multiple Sclerosis Bass Circuit had a great turn out this season, and drew far more anglers than in past seasons. Please visit their website for more information on how to help this great cause.
