Fassbind & Salas win WBFN President’s Challenge!
Madison Chain, Oct. 20th, 2007, by Brian Christianson

October 20, 2007 – The President’s Challenge is a tournament that is put on by the Wisconsin B.A.S.S. Federation Nation board and is designed as an end of the year fun tournament for all of its members. If the President and his partner win the tournament, the money goes towards the treasury of the WBFN. If anyone else wins, the money is split amongst the top three finishers.

It was a cool and fairly windy day in Madison ; the bite was pretty tough for everyone. High pressure and wind were the conditions on the Chain, which yielded only 3 limits on the day.

First place was Kevin Fassbind and Cesar Salas, who came in with a limit of 6 fish for 14.5lbs, and had a 4.1lb kicker. They mainly stayed shallow all day and caught their fish on weedlines with senko’s and Brovarney swim jigs. Kevin said he caught his big fish on a spot within a spot that normally holds one good fish. Well, he got that one fish that propelled them to victory.

In second place were Brian Christianson and Jeremiah Shaver with a limit of fish weighing in at 13.5lbs. Their original plan was to fish deep weedlines with cranks and Carolina Rigs, but without any bites by 10am, they decided to move shallow. Using the wind to their advantage, they drifted through shallow weedlines casting 1/4oz Brovarney swim jigs (Blue Devil), and slowly bringing it through the weeds.

Coming in third place is the designer himself of Brovarney swim jigs, Dan Brovarney. He had the privilege of fishing along side the two WBFN Jr. State Champions, Max Brovarney and JP Weber. This team also fished shallow with swim jigs and managed to catch a limit of 10.7lbs.

A picnic with food and refreshments followed the tournament along with some smiles and some fishing stories. Overall, a great time was had by all despite the wind and tough fishing conditions. A big thank you goes out to the WBFN board for their hard work putting this on!
