Green Lake Came Alive with Smallies. On July 6th Melvin’s on Green Lake hosted the 3rd stop on the Big Bass Bonanza Tournament Trail with an eight fish limit and 49 teams, an average limit weighed 17 pounds. After the eight hour tournament, 41 teams came in with a limit and ¾ of them were smallmouth.
It was the only husband and wife team that took first place with 23.30 pounds. Pat and Nasha Martin just came back from their honeymoon in Canada. They worked seven to ten foot range throwing jerk baits and tubes. This win earns them $2,000 and puts this team in second place in total points. This first place has moved them up to second place in overall point standings. John Patock and Pete Swenson followed in second place with 23.07 pounds. John and Pete focused on post-spawn smallmouth bass that were positioned on sharp drop offs adjacent to spawning flats to get their big bag. This team used a Carolina rigged tube bait and any color will work as long as it is WHITE and of course the tube was slightly modified. Ryan Jacobs and Jason Mohr rounding out third place with 22.77 pounds had no idea where to find any good size largemouth bass so they targeted smallmouth all day long. They found smallmouth literally all over the lake on any type of traditional rock line structure, but had about 6 areas where they had noticeably larger concentrations of fish. Fishing a very typical pattern with traditional smallmouth lures (tubes, etc…), the fish didn’t seem to be extremely particular about the lure but they were line shy. While pre fishing, any braid or thicker line was not producing nearly the numbers of fish as 8# fluorocarbon line produced. The fish had to have a good long look at the bait before they would bite, and once they grabbed it you had to set right away. The next stop on the Tournament Trail is the Horseshoe Chain in Cold Spring on August 17th. Big Bass Bonanza is a Skeeter Real Money endorsed event and is sponsored by Stub’s Marine, Grand Casino, Newmans Mfg, Pine Country Bank, Rejuvenade, Leena Lures and Ranger Boats.
