Glenn Walker’s Tournament Journal
2008 Season

May 3, BFL, La Crosse, Wis.

My 2008 fishing season began on Wednesday, April 30th.  I had the opportunity to hop in the boat with fellow FutureBass staff member Jeremiah Shaver.  We spent the day on pool 8 looking for active largemouth and smallmouth.  At the first spot, I caught largemouth on spinnerbaits, tubes and shakey heads.  This was a good feeling for my first time out for the year and gave me some confidence heading into the tournament.  We then went searching for some of the big staging smallmouth that had been biting.  The first stop we made proved to be very beneficial.  Dragging a Gambler Baby Bacon Rind on a Carolina-rig helped me hook up with two beautiful smallmouths; the one easily was over the 4 lb. mark.

Tournament day came and so did the adverse weather, 45 degrees and 30 plus mile per hour winds greeted the 244 BFL anglers.  My boater and I started the day throwing baits over submerged vegetation.  A white and chartreuse RC Tackle spinnerbait hooked my first keeper of the day.  The wind made the area we were fishing muddy and hard to fish.  A short run in the gale force winds made it seem very long, but it was worth it.  We began flipping flooded timber and boated several short fish.  On the way back down the bank, I was throwing a craw colored Yo-Zuri Rattlin Vibe and hooked up with a large fish.  Upon surfacing, we saw that it was a big smallmouth.  My partner did a great job netting the fish for me and gave me a jolt of energy and warmth.

With about three hours left to fish, we kept flipping and casting our baits to other areas of flooded timber and rock.  Only a few more short bass were to be caught.  My weight for my two bass was 7 lb. 8 oz. and my big smallmouth weighed 5 lb. 1 oz.  This put me in a tie for big bass on the co-angler side.  I placed 44th overall in the tournament and earned me valuable points for making the regional in October.

Leaving La Crosse, I just couldn’t be happier that I kept my mind focused and remained positive throughout the day.  I want to thank Jeremiah for taking me pre-fishing my boater and all my sponsors for their support.

I am looking forward to the next BFL on the Winneconne chain in early June.
