Glenn Walker’s Tournament Journal
2008 Season

May 18, Grant Count Bass Club 2-Man Open, Prairie Du Chien, Wis.

May 17-Pre-fishing:  With the high-water and busy spring schedule I had, I was unable to get down to my home waters of pool 10 until this tournament.  My partner, Wells Kaiser, and I pre-fished the day before the tournament with hopes of finding some hefty bass getting ready to spawn.

We began the day by fishing flooded timber and bushes in backwater sloughs and bays that had water in the 58 to 61 degree water.  Flipping tubes and beaver-style baits is what proved to be successful for us.  The bass seemed to holding tight or very near to the cover and were not cooperative in hitting reaction style baits.  After having covered a large section of water in this area, we were confident that we had established a good pattern.

We continued looking for flooded timber and bushes with slight to no current on it in a variety of water depths.  Another few hours on pool 10 allowed us to locate several more areas that we planned to hit on tournament day.

May 18-Tournament:  The summer like conditions that we saw all week and during practice was not to be found come tournament day.  A brisk north wind and cooler temperatures presented themselves and had Wells and I thinking if our bite from the day before would hold up.  After making a cold-run, we arrived to our starting spot and proceeded to fish this area until 11:30.  The size of the bass was not what they were the day before, but by flipping tubes and beaver style baits produced a limit for us.  The bass seemed to be relating to wood and bushes that had a non-flooded bank behind it.

Once we had our limit, we began looking for some upgrade fish.  We found several of these by flipping our plastics to flooded timber that had deep water close by.  By the end of the day, we had a limit that weighed in at 15.6 lb. and put us in the last spot for check in eighth.  The winning team had just over 22 lb., so the high water and cool conditions made fishing somewhat difficult for all the teams.

The first of two keys to my success in this tournament was my Seaguar fluorocarbon line.  I could flip my baits into the nasty of cover and not have to worry about breaking a fish off.  The other key was my Eagle Claw hooks; the HP Tube Hook and EWG hook were super sharp and kept my fish hooked until they were in the boat.
