Tournament Journal August 9, BFL, Prairie Du Chien, WI August 7-8 – Practice: I was only able to get out for a few short hours after work each day. I spent Thursday on pool 9 and Friday on pool 10, but what I learned from both days is that the bass were definitely relating to current and vegetation. August 9-Tournament: Turns out my few hours of practice before the event was going to pay off. My boater was a co-angler turned boater since he was on the waiting list, so I was able to have input on what to do throughout the day! We began the day fishing the same areas and patterns that I had fished the previous weekend during the Bass World Sports tournament, but those were not cooperative. At 11:00, I made a switch to an area that had vegetation, current and active fish. My only concern was that these fish might have already been pressured. Within ten minutes of being at this spot, I went from having no fish in the livewell to having four! My saving grace here was a Carolina-rigged Gambler Baby Bacon Rind, rigged on an Eagle 3/0 wide gap hook. My boater and I fished this area for awhile, but only got short fish. We had time to hit one more spot for me to get my limit fish. With about ten minutes left to fish, I was able to get my fifth fish on a Brovarney Baits swim jig. This was a huge relief to get my first limit of the year in a BFL event. I knew I had just earned some very valuable points for the year end standings. When the scales had closed, I ended with 9 lb. 3 oz. which put me at 36th, but I moved up to 16th in the year end standings! The final BFL event for the Great Lakes division is September 13-14th in La Crosse, WI. A big thanks goes out to my boater for giving me the chance to make decision on tournament day, it was a fun day on the water! My key piece of equipment for this event was my new Quantum Super Lite PT rod. This 7 foot MH rod, allowed me to feel the light biting bass on my Carolina rig. Good Fishin!! |
