Tournament Journal August 2, Bass World Sports, Harpers Ferry, Iowa July 31-August 1-Practice: My brother and I were finally going to get to fish a tournament together this season, so I began my practice for the Bass World Sports tournament by getting out after work on Thursday and before work on Friday. I was quickly able to establish a pattern of fishing main channel structure, which included mostly rock. I made effective use of my short pre-fishing time by using reaction baits that allowed me to cover water quickly. One lure that did well for me in practice was soft bodied swim baits rigged on one of the new Eagle Claw swimbait hooks. After my short practice, I felt confident heading into the tournament that we could get a good, quick limit off of the main channel and then go looking for a few bigger fish. August 2-Tournament: My brother and I started the tournament fishing our main channel areas with topwaters and flukes. We were able to capitalize on a very short time period in which the bass were hammering topwater lures. Following getting an ok limit off of the main channel, we headed down a slough that had a cut-bank, with wood on it. Here is where we were able to find some bigger largemouth. Flipping tubes and creature baits on Eagle Claw hooks was what worked well for us. Towards the end of the day we were faced with some fish care issues. Our weight following a penalty was 11.07 lb., which put us in 7th. The hard pill to swallow was that a decision we made cost us a second or first place finish. |
