Terry Bolton is a widely known among the avid tournament angler for his prowess and success on Kentucky Lake as well as across the nation. This past year was a great year for Terry as he qualified for the FLW Tour Championship for the 6th time.  For his career Terry has earned over $450,000 on the FLW Circuits alone as well as numerous winnings on his home waters with other organizations.  Being a longtime fan of his I was thrilled to have the opportunity to talk with Terry about a variety of topics.

Question: What are your annual goals as a Tournament Fisherman?

“I try to win a Tour event and qualify for the Tour Championship every year.  That never changes.  I don’t get caught up in trying to win Angler of the Year as much as some other guys do.  Although, I do think it is the hardest to achieve because you have to maintain consistency throughout the year.”

Question: Everybody is well aware of your favorite lake being Kentucky Lake , what are some other lakes you really like?

“The upper Mississippi River around Lacrosse is one of my favorites.  I fished the BFL All-American there in 1999 and really enjoyed it.  There were plenty of fish and lots of areas to fish.  Sam Rayburn and Kerr ( Buggs Island ) are right up there as well.”

Question: What is something unique about you that people may not know?

“I was a Tennis Player at Paducah Community College .  I qualified for the Junior College National Championships and got waxed!!  I thought I was a good player until then. “

Question: When is your favorite time to fish?  Why?

“The month of May is my favorite month.  You can catch fish deep, shallow and in between.”

Question: If you had one single bait to throw what would it be?    How would you fish it during different times of the year?

“Definitely a Spinnerbait.  I throw them more like a crankbait in that I don’t really see the bait back to the boat.  I like to slow roll them on the bottom and through any cover I can find.  I almost always throw a chartruese and white skirt.  I like the ½ ounce model for Pre-spawn and Fall fishing.  I throw the ¾ ounce model during postspawn to get a little deeper.  I do make some changes in blade sizes.  I normally  use #3 and #5 willow leaf blades but I will change to one colorado and one willow leaf.“

Question: Who are some other Tour Anglers that you are close friends with and how did that come about?

“Dan Morehead,  him and I grew up in the same town and he is close to my age. He is a great guy and great fisherman.”

“Andy Morgan, I got to know Andy at a BFL All American a few years ago.  He taught me a lot about shallow water flipping and I think I helped him with offshore structure fishing.”

“Dean Rojas, Dean and I met a few years ago and really just hit it off.  He is one of the most consistent anglers on Tour.”

Question:  What is some advice to give anglers trying to better themselves and be better tournament anglers?

“Fish in the moment,  we have all had tournaments where we practice and find fish then during the tournament we get programmed to do one thing instead of trusting yourself and using your instincts and let the fish tell you what to do.  It’s not an easy thing to do.”

“Learn from the days you struggle catching fish.  We all can remember and learned from our good days on the water.  Learn from the poor days as well.”

After spending time talking with Terry it’s easy to understand why he is so well liked and successful.  He has a strong passion for the sport and a competitive desire to maintain his success and take it even further.
