Prefishing
Well, there is not a lot to talk about for prefishing for this tournament. I did most of my preparation by looking back into my journals on this time of year and seeing what I had done. Going to the lake I felt confident I would be able to locate fish.

We got the launch at 7:00 PM the night before the event to get some more information from the fish. We headed down to the main lake and then dropped the trolling motor. The water temperature in this area was just shy of 60 degrees. I started out by working a swim jig in the blue devil pattern. I was unable to get any and switched to one of Brovarney Baits finesse jigs in black and purple. Within minutes, I caught a fat 15-inch large mouth. We worked around this bay for a while longer and shook off a couple of other fish, while trying to establish some type of pattern.

We then left this bay and headed out to the main lake to try to find some other action. We stopped at a tapering flat with rock and some docks. Within minutes, we hooked up again with another solid chunk in the 15-inch range on the finesse jig. The water temperatures in this area were a few degrees cooler, but I liked the area better. We continued down this stretch and boated another fish and decided to call it a night as it was starting to get dark. We left the lake in high spirits with what we found.

The Tournament
Well, it was a picture perfect day for fishing. The forecast was for the mid 70’s and sunny, the only down side was that the wind was to blow at 15-20 miles per hour, and did it blow. Anyway, we took off at 7:30 and headed to our first spot. I started by throwing the same Brovarney’s finesse jig I had success with the night before. I had my first fish on in just minutes; I thought it was going to be a great day. The fish ended up measuring just short of legal, so back it went. I continued fishing and started to become frustrated with short biting fish. Meanwhile, my partner was working a Venom tube in watermelon and was having more success with hooking up and getting more strikes. With that, I switched to a Venom Lures Dream Craw. It was shortly after that that I caught our first legal of the day. We worked the area a little longer and moved to our next spot.

We pulled into this area and I flipped my dream craw into a tree and almost immediately hooked up with a solid 2 ½ pound bass. Thing were starting to came together. I picked up a crank bait as we worked to our next spot in hopes of catching a stay fish. I missed a few and then caught a short fish as we got to the next area. My partner continued to work the tube while I fished the crank for a while. I was happy that I did. I hooked into a solid bass that went 3.98 pounds and helped to anchor our catch. Moving down this shoreline, my partner, Frank Ungaro caught his best fish of the day a solid 2 ½ pound bass on his Venom Tube.

We fished the area for a while longer with no more leagals being caught, so we pulled pin and headed to the next area. This was a great move. With in an hour, we put 3 solid legals in the boat that were each over 2 ¾ pounds. All of these were caught on a Venom Dream Craw. We finished the day out looking for a kicker, but we were not able to get any other real good fish. We continued to catch a number of legals, but they were all at, or under 15 inches.

I would like to thank Venom Lures and Brovarney Baits for their fine products. Without them, I doubt that I would have seen the same success. Thank you. I encourage you to check them both out at www.venomlures.com and www.brovarneybaits.com .
