Lake Monona
Sunday Morning Conditions: Winds Calm, then E 5 mph, Mostly Cloudy, 72 deg water temp.
The conditions were absolutely beautiful as I arrive at the Olin-Turville Boat Ramp: winds were calm, and a beautiful sunrise in the East greeted me as I arrived. Anticipating some heavier boat traffic on Father’s Day, I decided to try offshore structure early in the morning, and then go shallow later on. Many milfoil beds are looking healthy and dense, so I worked some of my usual weedline points with a Carolina Rigged Gambler Ace. After 5 minutes I picked-up a 14” smallmouth. A little while later, my line jumped and started to slowly pull away, and I set the hook into a healthy largemouth as seen in the photo. It topped the scales at 5 lbs, 5 oz. Although my initial guess was that the better bass were out deep, action definitely slowed after I moved around to similar spots. I managed to catch a couple other smallmouth dropshotting, but their size was nothing to brag about. I did find a couple decent largemouth willing to react to a Gambler BigEZ swimbait, but I failed to land any one of them. It was a great day to be on the water.
Carolina Rig: Dobyns Champion 703C with 17 lb Suffix Seige and 14 lb Suffix Fluorocarbon leader. Green Pumpkin Gambler Ace.
