Recently I had the pleasure of receiving one of Uncle Josh’s new Bump and Run lures in the mail. On my last fishing trip I took the new lure with me and ran it through what I would consider a pretty tough try-out.
I’ll break this review down into several categories:
1. Innovation:
Uncle Josh has really come up with a unique lure with the new Bump and Run. The head of the bait can swivel 360 degrees and has a small bill attached to the head, similar to that of a crank-bait. On the head there are lines printed on the head and body portion of the bait to allow the angler to rotate the head to incite different actions out of the bait. When the bill of the bait is in the upright position (opposite of the hook-point), and then rotated left, the bait will track off to the left, and when rotated to the right, the bait runs to the right. This was very effective in allowing a fisherman to approach targets from different angles. If the bill is left in the “center” position, the bait has a very tantalizing action, similar to some of the vibrating jigs available today, but a considerably more subtle. When the “bill” of the bait is rotated downward (to the same side of the bait as the hook point) the bait works very similarly to that of a swim jig. The “bill” can be rotated to the left or right when in this configuration as well, and the bait will track left or right accordingly.
On this feature alone, I must say Uncle Josh has created a very unique lure.
2. Components:
When I first received the lure I gave it fairly thorough inspection, and recognized that Uncle Josh has used quality components in the construction of the lure. The hook was very sharp, and the skirt was made of high quality silicone material.
3. Function:
It took a while for me to find the proper rate of retrieve needed to get the desired action out of the bait. With the bill in the upright center position, it required a slow rate of retrieve and the occasional rod twitch to get the bait to run properly. With the head positioned to the left and right, the bait ran well in both directions. I fished the bait around logs, flooded bushes and rip-rap, and in a short period of time had gotten several strikes with the bump and run lure.
Summary:
Uncle Josh has definitely created a very interesting lure, it’s uses are potentially boundless. I was able to run the lure left and right, past targets from different angles and provoked strikes with the bait during my test period. There is definitely some thinking that went into the creation of this bait. It has a few quirks that will require some use to fully understand it’s potential, but overall, this bait piqued my interest.
